About Us
The SBPA is a registered non-profit company whose members consist of business premises owners and businesses operating within Samcor Park x 1.
The area is bordered by the Old Bronkhorstspruit Road – (Pretoria Road) in the south, Simon Vermooten in the west, Ford in the North the open field bordering Nelmapius in the east and within the two roads servicing all premises Vonkprop Street and Propshaft Rd.
The area was demarcated as an industrial area way back in the 1970’s. The present Ford assembly plant was in 1961 built for Chrysler where old favourites such as the Valiant and Peugeot 504 were assembled. The adjoining industrial was named Chrysler Park and was only developed in the late 1960’s. After divesting from South Africa in 1988 by selling its 42% share in Samcor, the plant continued to sell branded Ford vehicles and also assembled Mitsubishi and Mazda at the present assembly plant. In 1994 Ford bought back 45% of Samcor and in 1998 the remaining shares.
The remainder of the business park outside Ford’s premises was developed in the 1970’s.
Some of the oldest businesses in the park includes …… and presently houses some …. Premises with mainly medium scale manufacturing and warehousing companies.
The Tshwane Automotive Special Economic Zone was proclaimed in 2015 and the area adjacent to Samcor Park x 1 was rapidly developed and is being further developed and is part of the largest automotive city in Africa, an ideal location for asset growth with excellent connectivity to the N4 freeway and by implication extremely easy access to the complete Gauteng and National Freeway system with good infrastructure of electricity, water, electronic connectivity and other service. The Park is also close to the city of Pretoria as well as in close proximity to shopping centres and industrial suppliers based in the old industrial area of Silverton and Waltloo and offers an easy commute to employees in Mamelodi and the greater Pretoria East.
In 2019 the members established the SPBA with its initial goal to combat dumping which was taking place on a large scale alongside the park’s two main road, Vonkprop and Propshaft. It was decided to involve the local community in patrolling the streets and preventing dumping and at the same time collecting trash along the two streets in the park. This was initially a 24 hour patrol but since the personnel was not equipped nor trained for security services, it was decided to maintain the “Trash Police” only during daylight hours and to employ a security company to do nightly motorized armed patrols in the area. This has resulted in a significant drop in crime and other mischief in the area although the area is still vulnerable to crime.
These initial goals were expanded into a project whereby the area would be closed off during night- time and access monitoring during daytime and night-time hours and an official application was lodged with the City Council of Tshwane. This process was interrupted by the Covid pandemic and disruptions in the City Planning office and is still being assessed by City Planning. During this process the required percentage of premise owners were obtained.
Propshaft road
Vonkprop Street
The proposed map of the precinct – once authorised, is enclosed.
The project includes the following:
Two access points with security offices at Propshaft and Vonkprop entrances.
Manned 24 hours with cameras and boom gate at Vonkprop in the south / east entrance and in Propshaft in the north entrance with gates that can be closed for security purposes.
As at present, armed vehicular patrol during night-time hours.
An electrified security fence along the eastern and southern borders – mainly along Propshaft and the Vonkprop entrance and fencing off access from Pretoria road over the undeveloped area bordering Pretoria Rd.
Cameras alongside Propshaft and Vonkprop strategically placed connected to a control room. Members’ own cameras facing the street can also be linked into this system. The cameras at the entrances can identify stolen and suspect’s vehicle and would be continuously linked to a database.
At present an active Whatsapp group informs all members of security issues and other common matters.
